Christopher Smith (40), better known by his friends as Shu, is a production rigger based in Kwazulu Natal. A knee injury has kept him from working, and while he has finally been given a date for an operation to take place at a local government hospital – 9 September – it would be wonderful to raise funds to help with bills that have crept in during this time.
The SOS Charity Fund, an initiative by DWR Distribution, have transferred R10 000 into Shu’s personal home loan account, but should we be able to raise an additional R30 000, it will really help him to get back on his feet again.
“My initial injury occurred during the fill up at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban for the Cassper Nyovest show on 29 November 2018 and I have struggled with pain and stability since,” Shu recalls. Then, in February 2019, while trying to remove a snake at his home, Shu’s knee ‘popped’ and locked into a bent position. He was diagnosed with an Acute Meniscal Injury both by the Estcourt Hospital and by a private orthopaedic surgeon. Corrective surgery is required for the damaged cartilage.
“Currently I have limited use and stability of my right leg, which makes physical activity troublesome,” said Shu. “Due to the nature of the work I am involved with, and despite looking for desk or non-physical work without success, I have not been unable to earn an income since February,” he says. “I have, hence, been unable to make payment on my financial commitments, current arrears and so forth.” On top of that, his car had to be repaired.
The good news is that Shu should be able to work at full capacity very soon after the operation.
