The SOS Charity fund, which forms part of DWR Distribution, is a charity organization aimed at freelancers in the entertainment and theatre industry and was born in December 2016. The SOS aims to lend a heling hand, on a merit basis, with basic assistance should a freelancer fall ill, injure themselves, or in the worst case-scenario, pass away, leaving their family under immense pressure. The SOS has also been involved in projects that offer hope and a touch of inspiration! This charity assists with deeds like providing grocery hampers, helping with medical bills, funeral costs, and helping with finances for motivational youth projects or as the need arises.
While costs and donations are mostly paid out by DWR Distribution, there are a few individuals who contribute to the fund. The SOS has also hosted an auction to raise awareness and and funds, and the next event is planned for July 2019. The SOS was the brainchild of Ian Staddon from DigiCo, an audio supplier. When visiting South Africa on a visit in 2016, he made the team of DWR aware of a similar charity that runs in England. It made sense to Duncan Riley of DWR to implement a similar project in South Africa.
“For technicians working for a company, there is often medical aid or some form of support,” said Duncan Riley. “But it is very sad when something tragic or unexpected happens to a freelancer and there is no back-up.”
