Blanket, food and clothing drive

A drive to collect blankets, food and clothing hopes to reach people in the live events industry who are really battling, as well as reaching out to the community at large and those living in dire situations. Leaders in the live events industry including Kagiso Moima We Masimini of Black Motion and #Feedourcrew as well as Jam Events’ Sam McGrath and Joannes Jaques, have come up with a plan that hopes to temporarily help people especially with Winter coming up.

“I have been in the thick of helping crew and technicians that have nothing at this time,” said Sam McGrath. “I’m frequently contacted for assistance and our teams are starving. With pretty much no resources left, I thought of a self-help project along the lines of collecting second-hand clothes. People  that need money could collect a bag and sell them for a small income. Hopefully, it could help create a micro business.”

Meanwhile, every Thursday for the past three months, Kagiso and his wife Phumzile along with Thabo Mokoena and Thato Mosito have provided hot meals to people temporarily  displaced and homeless in the deep city of Johannesburg.  “We reach around 200 people a night and deliver warm meals to those living under bridges, in drain pipes and in the city,” said Kagiso.

The campaign will kick off in Johannesburg and those who are keen to help should please deliver clothing, blankets or tinned food to the DWR Distribution offices which will be dispersed as needed.

Items will be sorted and placed into bags and allocated to people already registered on the #FeedourCrew database, who will be contacted to collect and resale the items. The food goodies and blankets collected will go to Kagiso and his team to continue their work and hopefully reach more people.

“The people in the live events industry are passionate, and while we wait for the industry to reopen, and it will, we hope that with the little we do have, we can share,” said Duncan Riley of DWR Distribution.
