Kilowatt AV ride for shoes

16 March 2011

Proudly South African technical support and equipment rental company, Kilowatt AV, formed a cycling team for the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour and managed to raise R30 000 for the Bobs for Good Foundation. If you haven’t heard of Bobs for Good, it’s an organisation that aims to give the children of South Africa the gift of hope, pride and dignity in a pair of shoes.

“It was an awesome experience and it was really heart-warming to receive so much support in our mission!” said Dillon Jearey, Managing Director of Kilowatt AV. For the past ten years, Dillon had been part of the Cycle Tour as a technical partner only. Then in 2009 he decided to see what all the fuss was about and started cycling himself. He talks about this journey.

“I bought a bike in 2009 and was instantly hooked. So in 2010 I did my first Cycle Tour and trained my heart out, only to be disappointed by an insanely strong wind on race day that was bound to affect my goal time! I gave it everything I had and still managed to pull a 3:48 out the bag which was very respectable, however I realised soon after that I had not even seen any of the views, nor did I experience any of the fun that the tour offers.”

“It was in the later part of 2010 that my father and I decided we should enter a corporate team and tour the race for fun. I did this and the dream started taking shape. By November we had a team but wanted a twist. While we really wanted to tour, we also wanted to see the views, stop for drinks and most of all raise money for a worthy cause.”

“I approached clients and suppliers and before long we had a team and money started rolling in for our charity drive. We decided that we would support the Bobs For Good Foundation as we really respect their passion and focus.”

“We put together a team uniform and had a pasta evening the night before the race. When the Cycle Tour Trust became aware that we were raising money for charity, they moved us up from corporate to start with the charity groups and the rest is history. The day was awesome! The team rode together the entire way and many people commented on how good we looked. A twitter user even commented that our team looked more professional, than the pro teams!”
