The annual On the Night fundraising event, staged by St John’s College in Houghton on the 10 October, attracted 7000 thousand patrons and featured Mi Casa performing with the school choir, and finalists from Last Band Standing, an inter school band competition. The sky was ablaze with a magnificent fireworks display and eight powerful Robe BMFLs, which created Hollywood beams and washed the old school in colour. A further 78 Robe fixtures were used, four Showline Nitro 510 added intense burst of light, Clay Paky Sharpy fixtures were faithful as always, and control was on a grandMA2 light. Lior Manelis and his team from Pristine Moods Productions headed up the technical aspects of the outside production, held on the school grounds, for the second consecutive year. They trusted MJ Event Gear for additional support. Marius Marais from Audio Logic ensured outstanding PA while Starburst supplied the fireworks.
For the first time, Lior used Robe BMFLs on an event. “We used a total of eight Robe BMFLs,” he said. “ Six were used to shine up onto the school building, five of which used colour wash and one dedicated for gobo work. The gobo was projected onto a building from 43m away and remained crisp!”
The additional two Robe BMFLs were used at Front of House facing towards stage’s front. It was mind-blowing,” Lior chuckles. “They were so bright, it was something else. We unfortunately did not have enough electricity to run more as we were already running four three phases.” The units were also used to create search light effects.
Lighting Designer Olebogeng Boinamo “Ole” from MJ Event Gear programmed on a grandMA2 Light, using grandMA 2 on PC for back up, 1 grandMA2 3D and six universes.
“Ole is such a champion,” said Lior. “Every time he did something else with the BMFLs I was in awe. One thing I was very impressed with was the transition and smoothness from one color to the next. It felt like LED but it was actually a globe discharge.”
On the BMFL there is no white space between colours on the colour wheel basically allowing you to do perfect split colours.
The stage area consisted of a Thomas Roof, 10 x 8 m with a 5 x 8 PA wing left and right with two P5 screens left and right of that. The remaining lighting fixtures were rigged on the stage roof.

History of Pristine Moods
Pristine Moods Productions was officially registered as a company in 2007 by Lior Manelis. From the age of 14, Lior worked as a DJ at the Italian Club where he gained experience and then worked at Nite Fever in Fourways, Manhattan and Billy the Bums for six years. “By that time, I had built myself two subs and two speakers with a little DJ console, “ said Lior. “And I thought to myself, that’s it, that’s all I’m ever getting.”
He was wrong. “I landed up adding more and more equipment because my clients, who were regularly rendering services, were asking me, ‘Well don’t you have a screen?’ or ‘Don’t you have a light?’ It landed up being so repetitive and frequent that I decided to invest in all different angles of the industry.”
