There are three things that Derek Kruger, Workshop Manager at DWR Distribution, is passionate about: Family, the race track and wolves.

A new tradition at DWR is to give staff a small gift voucher when they celebrate their birthday. A couple of weeks ago, Derek Kruger made a request. Could his voucher be donated instead to Huskyromi Wolf Sanctuary in Reitz. His birthday is on 20 September 2015.

“I have always loved dogs,” said Derek. He has a spoilt Husky called Logan. “He has Karen, my wife, and I wrapped around his paws – yes, all four of them!”

Derek first came to hear about Huskyromi in 2014, when they had a charity drive and awareness campaign in Muldersdrift. Derek was captivated, visited the sanctuary soon after, and a year ago “adopted” two wolves.

“Wolves are beautiful,” said Derek. “Many of the animals at the sanctuary have been brought to the country illegally and then dumped, in some cases hunted. I feel sorry them.”

The sanctuary has twenty five Huskies and one hundred and sixty seven Timber wolves and hybrids.“They are well looked after,” explains Derek. “The owner, Larry Paul, has dedicated his life to this cause.”

Huskyromi is a non-profit organization providing a safe haven for abandoned and abused huskies and wolves in South Africa. They provide a home to all huskies and wolves that can’t be kept as pets because of their complicated nature. Many of the animals arrive in a poor condition, some not even knowing what grass is, and are rehabilitated with loving care by Larry Paul. The aim is to promote and protect wolves and other wildlife. The sanctuary is open to the public and donations for buying of food, veterinary bills and other other expenses are always welcome.

Huskyromi is NOT a breeding facility and the animals are not sold. Their purpose is to take care of such animals for the span of their natural lives since they cannot be kept as pets under normal circumstances.
