MJ pulls out all the stops for R/evolution

Avolites Tiger Touch 2, powered by an Avolites Power Cube was in control for the R/evolution, the Renault Truck International Annual Roadshow hosted in the beautiful yet industrial feel of Turbine Hall in central Johannesburg. MJ Event gear supplied lighting, audio and rigging for the six workshops, test drives and gala dinner for their client Tinderbox. AV Systems handled all the AV requirements for the event.

Bold textured cement arches, steel piping and oversized hanging lamps running down the walkways cried out for colour. MJ washed this welcoming area in Renault’s corporate red with the use of 30 Longman LED parcans and 18 Longman LED Bars all running off an Avolites Power Cube, with control on an Avolites Tiger Touch.

The greatest task was converting the conference area into a gala dinner within a two-hour period. “It helps if you plan,” said Theo Rood, Technical Director at MJ. At the same time key MJ personnel were setting up at another gig at Sun City.

Working closely with Jason Beck of Tinderbox, minimal lighting equipment was used for the conference. The conference room was divided with draping which concealed LED panels, a stage and a wonderful range of lighting fixtures for the gala event. “For guests this created an illusion that it was a different room altogether,” said Rood.

The lighting for the gala was controlled on an Avolites Tiger Touch 2 and powered by Avolite Power Cubes. The rig included 4 Philips SL Nitros, 12 Robe 100 LED Beams, 12 Robe 600 LED Wash, 12 Robe Pointes, 6 Source Profiles, 10 2k Fresnels and 14 Longman ColorMe, 2 Le Maitre MVS Hazers and Prolyte H30 V trussing suspended by CM Lodestars.

Robe Pointes on stage created a punchy output. “The Pointes are the wow factor to any lighting rig,” he commented. They are fast becoming everyone’s favourite fixture.”

Especially created for the event were 18 light boxes which enhanced the décor element and added depth to the room. “We worked with well-known production manager Clinton Seery on this important event. The light boxes, manufactured with the assistance from local distributor DWR, were only used for the gala dinner. We basically rigged them up the night before, each unit prewired and patched. They were taken down again for the conference and then once again plugged in before the evening’s entertainment.”

Preproduction planning and what Rood describes as an MJ team that rocks, ensured that this was an all round, smooth running success as guests ended the night with the sounds of live performances by Swing City, The Muses and a dance ensemble.
